The Project
The Developmental Neuropsychology Lab — The DEN Lab — is a research group at the University of Auckland focused on improving life outcomes for children who have experienced early life adversity.
Its work spans developmental psychology, neuropsychology, longitudinal research and cognitive neuroscience, including research connected with major New Zealand studies such as Growing Up in New Zealand, the Dunedin Study and the Auckland Birthweight Collaborative Study.
NexStudio created a new digital home for the lab that could communicate this depth of research without making the experience feel dense or institutional.
Make serious research accessible, human and visually engaging.
The Challenge
Academic websites carry a lot of information. Research areas, publications, researchers, alumni, external studies and institutional information all need to coexist within the same experience.
For the DEN Lab, the challenge was not simply putting this information online. It was creating a clear hierarchy for researchers, students, collaborators and members of the public.
The design needed to maintain the credibility expected of a university research group while giving the lab a distinct identity of its own.
- Who the DEN Lab is
- What the team researches
- Who is behind the work
- What the lab has published
- How to connect with the team
Science, without the institutional feel
We moved away from the feeling of a traditional information-heavy academic website and built the experience around clarity, space and visual storytelling.
Large typography, carefully paced sections, photography and restrained interaction give the research room to breathe.
Instead of overwhelming visitors with information immediately, the experience progressively introduces the DEN Lab — beginning with its purpose before moving deeper into its research, people and publications.
A Research Structure Built for Exploration
The result is an information architecture that can accommodate substantial scientific content without feeling like a database.
- Research
- Experimental and longitudinal research is presented so different areas of work are easy to understand and explore.
- Team
- Individual profiles give the researchers a stronger presence, including backgrounds, interests and external academic profiles.
- Alumni
- Past members remain part of the lab’s wider research story rather than disappearing from the website.
- Publications
- Selected research gives visitors a direct route from the lab’s mission to the academic work behind it.
Designing Around People
Early-life adversity, mental health and neurodevelopment are complex subjects. We wanted the visual language to remain scientific without becoming clinical.
Photography of the researchers, generous spacing and straightforward language help put people at the centre of the experience. The website presents the DEN Lab not simply as a collection of research outputs, but as a team working toward better developmental outcomes for children and young people.
Credible enough for academia, approachable enough for everyone else.
An Interactive Layer
The site introduces an AI-powered DEN Lab assistant, giving visitors another way to discover information beyond traditional navigation.
Rather than treating AI as a separate novelty, it is incorporated as an additional layer of the website experience — helping turn a largely static research site into something visitors can actively explore.
Not simply pages to read, but interfaces to interact with.
The Result
The finished website gives the DEN Lab a digital presence that reflects both sides of its identity: rigorous research and real human impact.
Complex academic material is organised into a cleaner, more approachable experience, while the visual system gives the lab a recognisable identity beyond the conventions of a standard university webpage.
The platform now provides one place for visitors to discover the lab’s research, meet its researchers and alumni, explore selected publications and connect with the team.
